FAQ

What is FIRST?

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a program designed to give school-aged kids the ability to learn about science and technology from professionals while having a lot of fun! FIRST offers a wide range of programs for all ages, all of which are offered through Allendale Robotics! For more information visit: www.firstinspires.org.

What is the REC Foundation?

The Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation’s mission is to increase student interest and involvement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by engaging students in hands-on, affordable, and sustainable robotics engineering programs.

We see a future where all students design and innovate as part of a team, experience failure, persevere, and embrace STEM. These lifelong learners emerge confident in their ability to make the world a better place.

I don't know anything about engineering, can I still join the team?

Definitely!

We have no prerequisites for joining the team. This is a learning adventure for all of us. The FIRST program is a unique environment that allows you to work with  many different mentors and professionals to learn about science, technology, engineering, and more!

I don't go to Allendale, can I still join Allendale Robotics?

Yes! One of the things we love about our team is we include students from all the surrounding areas (current schools include: Jenison, Coopersville, Reeths Puffer, and home schooled students).

How much does it cost to be a member?

The cost of registration depends on what team you're on. The higher your grade level, the more expensive the registration fee is. Also, if your team qualifies for extra competitions (ex. State Championship and World Championship) more travel fees will occur.

We also never turn away students due to money. We work with each family on an individual basis to make our programs accessible for every single student.

When can I join a team?

Team registration for the following year typically opens in May, and accepts applications until the season is over. For Jr. FLL (grade 1-3), FLL (grade 4-8), and FTC (grade 7-8) we recommend signing up before the beginning of the school year to make your chances of being on a team the greatest.

For FRC (grades 9-12), we recommend an application being submitted by the beginning of January in order to ensure participation in the entire season, but we accept applications until the end of the season in April.
